Tarmac’s Thermal Rotary Dryers & Automotive Shredder Operations

Most large cities in the U.S. have huge steel shredding operations where cars and white goods are swallowed as shredders rip steel into smaller sizes which is then recycled into new steel. What was once a by-product or waste from steel shredding is a light fluffy material commonly referred to as Automotive Shredder Residue or ASR. Good news, there are valuable metals imbedded in ths scrap residue.

Here in Kansas City a large steel recycling facility has just invested in a new system to enhance the recovery of the imbedded metals from this scrap residue. Tarmac’s team recently visited the new scrap residue installation where the latest advancements in magnetic separation have been installed. One such advancement to metal separation uses a belt conveyor with metal detection instruments coupled with air jets to lift, separate and collect the valuable metals.

It is typical that 18 to 20 percent of the total weight of scrap residue has recoverable metals. Tarmac International, Inc. has installed Thermal Rotary Dryer Systems that can be used as a first step in shredder residue recycling by drying and reducing the moisture of the bulk scrap residue. This reduction in moisture gives the metal recycling plant a higher percentage of recoverd non-ferrous metals.
